Follow this recipe to prepare classic cake doughnuts, a perfect treat with a soft and cakey texture coated with sugar or your favorite glaze.

Equipment

  • 1 Deep fryer or large pot For frying the doughnuts
  • 1 Rolling pin For flattening the dough
  • 1 Doughnut cutter For cutting the doughnuts

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups All-purpose flour Plus more for dusting
  • 1/2 cup Granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp Baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp Ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 cup Milk
  • 2 tbsp Unsalted butter Melted
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 1 large Egg Beaten
  • For frying Vegetable oil

Instructions
 

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, nutmeg, and salt.
  • In another bowl, mix milk, melted butter, vanilla extract, and beaten egg together until well combined.
  • Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and roll it to about 1/2 inch thickness.
  • Use a doughnut cutter to cut out doughnuts. Gather scraps, re-roll, and cut out more doughnuts.
  • Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
  • Carefully place doughnuts in hot oil, a few at a time, and fry until golden brown on both sides (about 1-2 minutes per side).
  • Remove doughnuts with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Let them cool slightly before serving or glazing.
  • Optionally, coat warm doughnuts in sugar or glaze with your choice of icing.

Notes

Keep a close eye on the doughnuts while frying as they cook quickly and can burn easily.
