Follow this recipe to prepare the classic Fish & Chips, a popular British dish that features crispy battered fish served with golden fries.

Equipment

  • 1 Deep fryer or deep pan For frying the fish and chips
  • 1 Mixing Bowl For preparing the batter

Ingredients
  

  • 4 fillets White fish Such as cod or haddock
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour Plus extra for dusting
  • 1 cup Beer Or sparkling water
  • 1 tsp Baking powder
  • to taste Salt
  • to taste Pepper
  • 4 large Potatoes Peeled and cut into thick chips
  • as needed Oil For deep frying
  • to taste Salt For seasoning the chips

Instructions
 

  • Heat oil in a deep fryer or pan to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, and beer to form a smooth batter.
  • Pat dry the fish fillets and dust with flour, shaking off excess.
  • Dip each fillet into the batter, ensuring it's fully coated.
  • Fry the fish in hot oil until golden brown and cooked through, about 4-5 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  • Fry the potato chips in the same oil until golden and crispy, about 5-7 minutes. Drain on paper towels and season with salt.
  • Serve hot, with lemon wedges and tartar sauce if desired.

Notes

For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free flour and beer.
