Sugar-Dusted Beignets Recipe

Follow this recipe to prepare delightful Sugar-Dusted Beignets, classic New Orleans-style doughnuts, deep-fried to perfection and generously dusted with powdered sugar.

Equipment

  • 1 Deep fryer For frying the beignets
  • 1 Mixing bowl For preparing the dough

Ingredients
  

  • 2 1/4 tsp Active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups Warm water 110°F
  • 1/2 cup Sugar
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 2 large Eggs Beaten
  • 1 cup Evaporated milk
  • 7 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup Shortening Melted
  • as needed Vegetable oil For frying
  • to taste Powdered sugar For dusting

Instructions
 

  • In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add sugar, salt, eggs, and evaporated milk. Mix well.
  • Stir in 4 cups of flour and beat until smooth. Add the shortening and add remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  • Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  • Heat oil in a deep fryer to 370°F (185°C).
  • Roll out dough to 1/8 inch thickness and cut into 2-inch squares.
  • Fry squares a few at a time until golden brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels.
  • Dust generously with powdered sugar while still warm. Serve immediately.

Notes

For an extra twist, try stuffing the beignets with chocolate or fruit preserves before frying.
