Ingredients
  

  • 4 cup stale bread, cubed (any type, such as French, brioche, or challah)
  • 2 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/4 cup raisins or dried currants (optional)
  • Butter for greasing the baking dish

Instructions
 

  • Preheat the Oven:
    Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x9-inch (23x23 cm) baking dish with butter.
  • Prepare the Bread:
    Cube the stale bread into bite-sized pieces. If your bread isn't stale, you can lightly toast it in the oven to dry it out.
  • Make the Custard Mixture:
    In a medium saucepan, combine the milk, heavy cream, and sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg (if using).
  • Combine Bread and Custard:
    Place the cubed bread in the prepared baking dish. If desired, sprinkle raisins or dried currants over the bread.Pour the warm milk and sugar mixture over the bread. Press the bread down gently to ensure it absorbs the custard.
  • Add the Egg Mixture:
    Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread. Press the bread down again to help it soak up the custard.
  • Bake:
    Place the baking dish in a larger roasting pan. Fill the roasting pan with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the baking dish. This creates a water bath, ensuring even cooking.Cover the setup with aluminum foil.
  • Bake Again:
    Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes, or until the bread pudding is set and the top is golden brown.
  • Serve Warm:
    Let the bread pudding cool for a few minutes before serving. It's delicious when served warm, but it can also be enjoyed at room temperature.
