Follow this recipe to prepare classic scones, perfect for tea time or breakfast. They are light, fluffy, and best served with cream and jam.

  • 1 Baking tray For baking the scones
  • 1 Mixing bowl For mixing the ingredients
  • 1 Pastry cutter To cut the scones

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups All-purpose flour Plus extra for dusting
  • 1/4 cup Sugar
  • 1 tbsp Baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 cup Unsalted butter Cold and cubed
  • 2/3 cup Milk Plus extra for brushing
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add cold cubed butter to the flour mixture and cut it in with a pastry cutter until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Mix in milk and vanilla extract until just combined; do not overmix.
  • Transfer the dough to a floured surface, knead gently, and roll out to about 1-inch thickness.
  • Cut out scones with a round cutter, place on the prepared baking tray, and brush tops with milk.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the scones are golden brown.
  • Serve warm with clotted cream and jam.

Notes

For a sweeter scone, add an extra tablespoon of sugar. You can also add dried fruits like raisins or cranberries for variation.
