Follow this recipe to prepare delicious homemade soft pretzels. These golden-brown, chewy pretzels are perfect as a snack or appetizer.

Equipment

  • 1 Large mixing bowl For preparing the dough
  • 1 Baking sheet For baking the pretzels
  • 1 Pot For boiling water with baking soda

Ingredients
  

  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp Sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp Active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 1/2 cups Warm water About 110°F
  • 2/3 cup Baking soda For the water bath
  • 1 large Egg Beaten, for egg wash
  • to taste Coarse salt For topping

Instructions
 

  • In a large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it bubbles.
  • Add salt and flour gradually, stirring until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm area until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  • Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C) and grease a baking sheet.
  • In a pot, bring 10 cups of water and baking soda to a boil.
  • Divide dough into 8 pieces, roll into ropes, and shape into pretzels.
  • Carefully dip each pretzel into the boiling baking soda solution for 30 seconds. Remove and place on the baking sheet.
  • Brush pretzels with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm.

Notes

For a cinnamon sugar twist, swap the coarse salt for a mixture of cinnamon and sugar.
